                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Acknowledging the contributions made by the Pittsburgh Ballet
     2     Theatre to the culture, economic development and tourism of
     3     the Greater Pittsburgh region.

     4     WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre was founded 38 years ago
     5  as a regionally rooted, professional ballet company with an
     6  expansive repertoire including works by the classical masters,
     7  innovative works by contemporary choreographers and premieres of
     8  original choreography; and
     9     WHEREAS, As a member of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust,
    10  Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has grown to become one of the Greater
    11  Pittsburgh region's major cultural institutions; and
    12     WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and its affiliated school
    13  are ranked among the top ten ballet companies in the United
    14  States; and
    15     WHEREAS, More than 80 artists and administrators are employed
    16  by Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, with total annual salaries and
    17  benefits of $2.3 million; and
    18     WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is one of only two major

     1  arts organizations in the Greater Pittsburgh region to maintain
     2  a resident company of artists; and
     3     WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre reaches approximately
     4  100,000 men, women and children through its performances and
     5  programs each year; and
     6     WHEREAS, Through five main stage productions, Pittsburgh
     7  Ballet Theatre presents a schedule of more than 30 performances
     8  each season, drawing more than 70,000 patrons a year to
     9  Pittsburgh's Cultural District; and
    10     WHEREAS, Individuals from 60 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties
    11  have attended a Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre performance within the
    12  last three years; and
    13     WHEREAS, Individuals from all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico,
    14  have attended at least one Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre performance
    15  over the past few years; and
    16     WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has an annual subscriber
    17  base of 4,100 individuals residing in a 12-county radius
    18  surrounding Allegheny County; and
    19     WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre provides free performing
    20  arts education programs to some 15,000 school children each
    21  year; and
    22     WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School is renowned as
    23  a training ground for some 500 students, drawing dancers from
    24  throughout the country and abroad for intensive year-round
    25  study; and
    26     WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and its patrons generate
    27  significant economic impact through cultural spending and
    28  related spending annually; and
    29     WHEREAS, Through touring, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is
    30  sharing this cultural asset with communities throughout this

     1  Commonwealth; therefore be it
     2     RESOLVED, That the Senate acknowledge the contributions made
     3  by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre to the culture, economic
     4  development and tourism of the Greater Pittsburgh region.
