A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of April 15 through 21, 2007, as "Local 2 Government Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Local government is the backbone of our democracy 4 and the bedrock of our political system; and 5 WHEREAS, More than 12 million Pennsylvania residents rely on 6 the services and facilities provided by local government, 7 ranging from the special purpose functions of counties, school 8 districts and municipal authorities in the areas of judicial 9 administration, social welfare, education and provision of water 10 and sewer services, to the more general purpose functions of 11 cities, boroughs, towns and townships, such as maintenance of 12 roads and streets, police and fire protection and enforcement of 13 ordinances and land use controls; and 14 WHEREAS, This rich tapestry of local government is 15 represented by the Commonwealth's 67 counties, 56 cities, 961 16 boroughs, 91 first class townships, 1,456 second class
1 townships, one town, 501 school districts and 1,534 active local 2 authorities and the thousands of hardworking citizen officials, 3 many of whom serve without reward, who staff these local 4 governments; and 5 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's residents rely upon the dedication of 6 these local officials in meeting many of the residents' most 7 fundamental needs in nearly all facets of daily living; and 8 WHEREAS, The success of our local officials is a key element 9 in the overall quality of life; and 10 WHEREAS, Our local governments are a testimony to liberty, 11 freedom and the right to elected self-government; and 12 WHEREAS, Each year in Pennsylvania one week is set aside as 13 "Local Government Week"; and 14 WHEREAS, "Local Government Week" focuses attention on the 15 need for strong, independent and active local government in this 16 Commonwealth and recognizes the valuable contributions made by 17 residents serving their communities in public office; therefore 18 be it 19 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of April 15 20 through 21, 2007, as "Local Government Week" in Pennsylvania; 21 and be it further 22 RESOLVED, That the Senate commend and thank the 23 Commonwealth's local officials for their labor as the unsung 24 heroes of government.
