AN ACT
1 Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
2 act relating to the public school system, including certain
3 provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
4 schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
5 laws relating thereto," authorizing boards of school
6 directors to establish a program to provide high school
7 diplomas to certain veterans.
8 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
9 hereby enacts as follows:
10 Section 1. Section 1611 of the act of March 10, 1949
11 (P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949, is
12 amended by adding a subsection to read:
13 Section 1611. Academic Degrees.--* * *
14 (d) A board of school directors may establish a program to
15 be known as "Operation Recognition" which provides for granting
16 a high school diploma to any honorably discharged veteran who
17 served in the United States military in the Vietnam War between
18 the fifteenth day of November, one thousand nine hundred sixty-
19 one, and the twenty-eighth day of March, one thousand nine
1 hundred seventy-three, who attended high school between one
2 thousand nine hundred fifty-eight and one thousand nine hundred
3 seventy-three and who would have been a member of a graduation
4 class during the years one thousand nine hundred sixty-two
5 through one thousand nine hundred seventy-five but did not
6 graduate from high school due to entry into military service. A
7 board of school directors may award a diploma posthumously to an
8 eligible veteran. An application for a diploma under this
9 subsection must be made in the manner prescribed by the board of
10 school directors.
11 Section 2. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
