           GIBBONS, HERSHEY, KORTZ, KOTIK, MANN, MANTZ, McCALL, MENSCH,
           MILLARD, MOYER, PALLONE, PAYNE, RAMALEY, READSHAW, HESS,
           ROCK, REICHLEY, SAINATO, SANTONI, SIPTROTH, SONNEY, STABACK
           AND SWANGER, OCTOBER 6, 2008

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 6, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of October 19 through 25, 2008, as
     2     "Schuylkill County Mining Recognition Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Schuylkill County has a long and rich coal mining
     4  history; and
     5     WHEREAS, The anthracite coal mines of Schuylkill County
     6  helped to fuel the American Industrial Revolution; and
     7     WHEREAS, Schuylkill County coal miners contributed greatly to
     8  the American labor movement; and
     9     WHEREAS, Coal mining continues to have a presence in
    10  Schuylkill County; and
    11     WHEREAS, Today, coal remains an important source of fuel in
    12  this Commonwealth, supplying more than half of the State's
    13  electricity; and
    14     WHEREAS, Schuylkill County Intermediate Unit 29 and school
    15  districts throughout the county are devoting the school week of
    16  October 20 through 24, 2008, to the study of the county's coal

     1  mining past, as well as its significance today; and
     2     WHEREAS, This week was chosen to coincide with the
     3  anniversary of the end of the great Anthracite Coal Strike of
     4  1902, which lasted 162 days and ended on October 21, 1902; and
     5     WHEREAS, Historians often point to the Anthracite Coal Strike
     6  of 1902 as one of the key events in this nation's labor history,
     7  setting a new precedent in presidential intervention and
     8  arbitration; and
     9     WHEREAS, During this week, students will be learning about
    10  Schuylkill County's mining past, the lives of mining workers and
    11  the rise of unions, the importance of Schuylkill County
    12  anthracite to the American Industrial Revolution, the role coal
    13  plays in energy today, how it is formed and many other aspects
    14  of the anthracite coal industry in the region; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    16  important contributions of Schuylkill County's mining industry
    17  to this Commonwealth and this nation and designate the week of
    18  October 19 through 25, 2008, as "Schuylkill County Mining
    19  Recognition Week" in Pennsylvania.
