        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 3, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing October 16, 2008, as "ONE Campaign Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, ONE is a campaign of Americans of all beliefs and
     4  every walk of life united as ONE to help make poverty history;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, The campaign consists of more than 2.4 million
     7  people and is growing among 50 states and is one of this
     8  nation's most well-known and respected nonprofit, advocacy and
     9  humanitarian organizations; and
    10     WHEREAS, ONE believes that health workers and health
    11  communities are the centerpieces of any strong and vibrant
    12  society; and
    13     WHEREAS, The ONE campaign brings together people who want to
    14  help save and improve the lives of those suffering from extreme


     1  poverty and global disease with the premise that many voices
     2  united as ONE can put real pressure on international leaders to
     3  increase efforts to provide for basic needs like health,
     4  education, clean water and nutrition; and
     5     WHEREAS, ONE is a nonpartisan effort that believes that
     6  together we can help transform the future of an entire
     7  generation in the world's poorest countries; and
     8     WHEREAS, ONE raises public awareness about the issues of
     9  global poverty, hunger, disease and efforts to fight such
    10  problems in the world's poorest countries; and
    11     WHEREAS, Every three seconds, a child dies from illnesses
    12  associated with extreme poverty; and
    13     WHEREAS, Nearly one billion people live on less than $1 per
    14  day and an estimated 16,000 children die each day in the poorest
    15  counties of the world; and
    16     WHEREAS, The citizens of the United States can address these
    17  issues by recognizing the devastating impact extreme poverty and
    18  preventable disease have globally and by beginning to take
    19  action in our local communities to bring about change in the
    20  world; and
    21     WHEREAS, ONE works in communities, colleges and churches
    22  across this nation to educate and ask America's leaders to
    23  increase efforts to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty, from
    24  the United States budget and Presidential elections, to specific
    25  legislation on debt cancellation, increasing effective
    26  international assistance, making trade fair and fighting
    27  corruption; and
    28     WHEREAS, ONE believes in the best American tradition of
    29  helping others help themselves; and
    30     WHEREAS, Now is the time to join with other counties in a

     1  historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest
     2  people of this world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty; and
     3     WHEREAS, ONE believes in committing ourselves, one person,
     4  one voice, one vote at a time, to making a better, safer world
     5  for all people; therefore be it
     6     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize October
     7  16, 2008, as "ONE Campaign Day" in Pennsylvania.
