        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 2, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of October 2008 as "Meet the Blind Month"
     2     in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) was
     4  founded in 1940 to end discrimination against people who are
     5  blind and to secure first-class citizenship for all blind
     6  persons; and
     7     WHEREAS, Today the NFB represents more than 50,000 members
     8  across this nation and continues to work to secure equal rights
     9  and opportunities for all individuals who are blind and visually
    10  impaired; and
    11     WHEREAS, The NFB and other organizations work to change
    12  attitudes about blindness by providing information to parents,
    13  teachers, school administrators and to business, government,
    14  social and civic leaders; and

     1     WHEREAS, Since blindness is still frequently misunderstood, a
     2  public education campaign, "Meet the Blind Month," was developed
     3  to create opportunities for people to learn firsthand that
     4  individuals who are blind and visually impaired are like
     5  everyone else; and
     6     WHEREAS, The NFB and other organizations invite neighbors,
     7  coworkers and classmates to set aside the month of October 2008
     8  to get involved and to learn more about how individuals who are
     9  blind and visually impaired lead full and active lives;
    10  therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    12  month of October 2008 as "Meet the Blind Month" in Pennsylvania.
