INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, SEPTEMBER 15, 2008
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the month of November 2008 as "National Family 2 Caregiver Month" in Pennsylvania, and commending the service 3 and dedication family caregivers provide to older adults. 4 WHEREAS, Most care provided to older adults at home is 5 delivered by family members, and according to Children of Aging 6 Parents, a Pennsylvania caregiver organization, an estimated 54 7 million Americans provide care for adult family members and 8 friends who, because of disabling illnesses or conditions, have 9 limited ability to carry out daily activities such as bathing, 10 managing medications or preparing meals; and 11 WHEREAS, Of all adults receiving long-term care at home, 78% 12 rely exclusively on family and friends to provide assistance; 13 and 14 WHEREAS, Of all people with Alzheimer's disease, 70% live at 15 home, where families provide at least 75% of their care; and
1 WHEREAS, Family involvement is critical to maintaining the 2 independence of older adults who need assistance with activities 3 of daily living and avoiding premature institutionalization; and 4 WHEREAS, Older adults who live at home usually live longer 5 and spend more time with their families and communities, 6 affording them a greater opportunity to continue to enrich this 7 Commonwealth by sharing their valuable wisdom, life experiences 8 and talents with other generations; and 9 WHEREAS, Primary caregivers who provide continuous care in 10 the home often gain a great deal of personal satisfaction, but 11 they can also experience physical, psychological and financial 12 stress; and 13 WHEREAS, Most Pennsylvania caregivers have provided care to 14 an impaired or disabled person or know someone who has; 15 therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 17 Month of November 2008 as "National Family Caregiver Month" in 18 Pennsylvania, and commend the service and dedication of this 19 Commonwealth's family caregivers who improve the lives of many 20 older Pennsylvanians.
