A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the life and extending condolences for the supreme 2 sacrifice made by Private First Class Derek D. Holland of 3 Company A, 228th Brigade Support Battalion of the 4 Pennsylvania Army National Guard located in Bethlehem who 5 lost his life in service to our country near the town of 6 Zormat in Gardez Province, Afghanistan, on June 3, 2008. 7 WHEREAS, Private First Class Derek D. Holland was a 2006 8 graduate of Pen Argyl High School and attended the Career 9 Institute of Technology, Forks Township; and 10 WHEREAS, Pfc. Holland joined the Pennsylvania Army National 11 Guard in 2006 as a member of Company A, 228th Brigade Support
1 Battalion from Bethlehem; and 2 WHEREAS, After enlistment, Pfc. Holland was subsequently 3 promoted to the rank of Private First Class; and 4 WHEREAS, Pfc. Holland was deployed with Company A to serve in 5 Afghanistan; and 6 WHEREAS, While serving in Afghanistan to provide security for 7 the team that was helping rebuild the Afghan infrastructure, 8 Pfc. Holland made the ultimate sacrifice for his country when an 9 improvised explosive device destroyed the Humvee in which he was 10 riding near the town of Zormat in Gardez Province, Afghanistan; 11 and 12 WHEREAS, Pfc. Holland will be posthumously awarded a Purple 13 Heart and a Combat Action Badge for his heroic actions; and 14 WHEREAS, Pfc. Holland is survived by his parents, Kathy L. 15 Andreas and David G. Holland; therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pay tribute and 17 honor to the memory of Private First Class Derek D. Holland with 18 gratitude for his courage, dedication and selflessness in 19 fighting for freedom on behalf of the citizens of this nation 20 and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and be it further 21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 22 the family of Private First Class Derek D.
