INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JULY 2, 2008
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating August 2008 as "Native American Awareness Month" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The Lenape (Delaware) are an indigenous people in 4 this Commonwealth and were displaced from the eastern states to 5 Indiana in the early 1800s; and 6 WHEREAS, The Thunder Mountain Lenape is an organization of 7 persons who share the Native American heritage of the Lenape; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, The Thunder Mountain Lenape has been active in their 10 community interpreting their traditions, heritage and culture 11 regionally, Statewide and internationally, including exhibits of 12 art at the United Nations; and 13 WHEREAS, The Thunder Mountain Lenape holds a Native American 14 Festival in August; and
1 WHEREAS, The United Nations celebrates August 9 of each year 2 as "Indigenous Peoples' Day"; and 3 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives supports the United 4 Nations' effort to increase public awareness of indigenous 5 peoples' cultural heritage and place in today's society; 6 therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate August 8 2008 as "Native American Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
