        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 30, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Observing July 4, 2008, as "Let Freedom Ring Day" and
     2     encouraging Pennsylvania to participate in the National Bell
     3     Ringing Ceremony that will occur on that day.

     4     WHEREAS, When getting together with family and friends to
     5  celebrate the 4th of July, it is sometimes easy to forget the
     6  fundamental principles underlying the celebration; and
     7     WHEREAS, The "Let Freedom Ring" National Bell Ringing
     8  Ceremony was established by Congress in 1963 to remind Americans
     9  of the bravery, courage, commitment and wisdom of the men and
    10  women who fought to create and preserve this nation; and
    11     WHEREAS, Bell ringing announced our Declaration of
    12  Independence in 1776 in Philadelphia at the Liberty Bell, and
    13  the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution now sponsors
    14  the "Let Freedom Ring" National Bell Ringing Ceremony each year


     1  on July 4; and
     2     WHEREAS, Participating bells this year are being rung at
     3  thousands of locations around the country, including
     4  Independence Hall in Philadelphia, UAL Flight 93 Memorial Chapel
     5  in Shanksville, Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia, the Borough of
     6  Sellersville, the National Cathedral in Washington, DC,
     7  Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge National Historical
     8  Park, on all commissioned ships of the United States Navy, Coast
     9  Guard and the merchant marine and at churches, synagogues,
    10  government buildings and carillons across the country; and
    11     WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians are encouraged to ring a bell 13
    12  times at 2 p.m. on July 4 to observe the meaning and spirit of
    13  Independence Day; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That July 4, 2008, be observed as "Let Freedom Ring
    15  Day"; and be it further
    16     RESOLVED, That all Pennsylvanians be encouraged to
    17  participate in the National Bell Ringing Ceremony by ringing a
    18  bell 13 times at 2 p.m. on July 4.
