        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 30, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating August 2008 as "Pennsylvania Produce Month" in this
     2     Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry generates more
     4  than $141 million in revenues to the economy of this
     5  Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, Three thousand five hundred farm families manage
     7  about 48,000 acres, which produce more than 200,000 tons of
     8  vegetables for fresh and processing use; and
     9     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's vegetable growers are national
    10  leaders in the production of pumpkins, cantaloupes, fresh market
    11  sweet corn, fresh market tomatoes and the processing of sweet
    12  corn and snap beans; and
    13     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania vegetables are not only "Simply
    14  Delicious" but also "Simply Nutritious" in providing important

     1  vitamins, fiber and other dietary components that are essential
     2  to a healthy, balanced diet; and
     3     WHEREAS, Health authorities have long encouraged increased
     4  consumption of vegetables for both nutritional and disease
     5  prevention purposes; and
     6     WHEREAS, Fresh Pennsylvania vegetables are available in
     7  abundant supply and peak quality at community farmers' markets,
     8  roadside farm markets and supermarkets throughout this
     9  Commonwealth during the month of August; and
    10     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's vegetable industry is committed
    11  to using integrated pest management and other good agricultural
    12  practices to produce, in an environmentally sound manner,
    13  vegetables and vegetable products that are both nutritious and
    14  safe; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate August
    16  2008 as "Pennsylvania Produce Month"; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all citizens
    18  to enjoy this Commonwealth's abundant supply of "Simply
    19  Delicious" and "Simply Nutritious" fresh and processed vegetable
    20  products while recognizing the industry's contributions to our
    21  economy and our health.
