        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 23, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of September 2008 as "Prostate Cancer
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society reports that prostate
     4  cancer is the most common type of cancer, other than skin
     5  cancer, diagnosed among men in the nation and estimates that
     6  186,320 new cases will occur in 2008, 6,510 of which will be in
     7  this Commonwealth; and
     8     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society reports that prostate
     9  cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in
    10  the nation and will cause an estimated 28,660 deaths in 2008,

     1  1,430 of which will be in this Commonwealth; and
     2     WHEREAS, The National Cancer Institute reports that this
     3  Commonwealth is among the top five states with new cases in
     4  2008; and
     5     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that men have
     6  a 1 in 6 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer in their
     7  lifetime; and
     8     WHEREAS, The risk of developing prostate cancer rises sharply
     9  after age 50 and doubles every ten years thereafter; and
    10     WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is twice as common among African-
    11  American men; and
    12     WHEREAS, Early detection and screening for prostate cancer
    13  are vital to combating the disease, especially for men more than
    14  50 years of age, African-American men and men with a family
    15  history of prostate cancer; and
    16     WHEREAS, With early detection, the five-year relative
    17  survival rate for men with localized prostate cancer is 100%;
    18  and
    19     WHEREAS, Greater public awareness and education about
    20  prostate cancer is necessary to help protect the health and
    21  welfare of men; therefore be it
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    23  month of September 2008 as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in
    24  Pennsylvania and encourage all men to educate themselves about
    25  the risk of prostate cancer.
