HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 794 Session of 2008


        INTRODUCED BY COHEN, RUBLEY, FREEMAN, JAMES, BENNINGTON,
           BRENNAN, FRANKEL, GOODMAN, MAHONEY, M. O'BRIEN AND SIPTROTH,
           JUNE 13, 2008

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON INTERGOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS,
           JUNE 13, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging nonappeal of the court decision on currency
     2     discrimination.

     3     WHEREAS, The United States Court of Appeals for the District
     4  of Columbia Circuit has ruled that United States bill currency
     5  discriminates against people who are visually challenged; and
     6     WHEREAS, It is difficult for people with sight impairments to
     7  tell the differences of the denominations of currency, making
     8  them subject to fraud or error in currency transactions; and
     9     WHEREAS, Solutions to this problem may easily be adopted by
    10  the Department of the Treasury by changing the size or shape of
    11  currency; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    13  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the Federal Government not to
    14  appeal the court ruling on currency discrimination and instead
    15  urge the Department of the Treasury to commence designing and
    16  promptly produce currency whose denominations can be determined
    17  by touch; and be it further

     1     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be sent to the
     2  United States Secretary of the Treasury.
