INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 20, 2008
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of July 2008 as "Special Olympics 2 Pennsylvania Month." 3 WHEREAS, Special Olympics is an international nonprofit 4 organization dedicated to the empowerment, through sports and 5 physical activities, of children and adults with intellectual 6 disabilities; and 7 WHEREAS, Inclusion and community involvement are fundamental 8 to the worldwide Special Olympics movement; and 9 WHEREAS, Special Olympics Pennsylvania provides free year- 10 round training and fair competition for athletes of all ability
1 levels in a variety of individual and team Olympic-type sports; 2 and 3 WHEREAS, Special Olympics Pennsylvania conducts local and 4 sectional events and three major Statewide events: Winter Games, 5 Summer Games and Fall Festival; and 6 WHEREAS, Special Olympics Pennsylvania volunteers ensure that 7 participants enjoy and have a chance to excel in training for 8 local, State, national and world competitions; and 9 WHEREAS, Thousands of community and campus volunteers fulfill 10 essential tasks as coaches, officials, escorts and award 11 presenters on behalf of Special Olympics Pennsylvania; and 12 WHEREAS, Special Olympics Pennsylvania advances acceptance 13 and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities; and 14 WHEREAS, Special Olympics Pennsylvania athletes honor the 15 oath Eunice Kennedy Shriver introduced at the inaugural 16 International Special Olympics Games in Chicago on July 20, 17 1968: 18 Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the 19 attempt; 20 therefore be it 21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 22 month of July 2008 as "Special Olympics Pennsylvania Month"; and 23 be it further 24 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 25 Special Olympics Pennsylvania, 124 Washington Square, 2570 26 Boulevard of the Generals, Norristown PA 19403.
