        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 12, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 18, 2008, as "LiveStrong Day" in Pennsylvania in
     2     support of cancer awareness and commending the Lance
     3     Armstrong Foundation for its continued commitment to cancer-
     4     related issues.

     5     WHEREAS, According to the Department of Health and the
     6  University of Pittsburgh, cancer is the second leading cause of
     7  death in this Commonwealth; and
     8     WHEREAS, Three out of four people in their lifetimes will
     9  have a family member diagnosed with cancer; one in three women
    10  and one in two men will be diagnosed with cancers in their
    11  lifetimes; and 1.4 million people will be diagnosed with cancer
    12  in the United States this year; and
    13     WHEREAS, More than 559,000 Americans are expected to die from


     1  cancer this year, and African-American men and women have the
     2  highest mortality rates for all cancer sites combined; cancer is
     3  the number one killer of those under 85 years of age; and
     4     WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth have concern and
     5  compassion for people affected by cancer; and
     6     WHEREAS, By uniting people affected by cancer to raise
     7  awareness through education, prevention, screening and early
     8  detection efforts, we gain strength in the fight against cancer
     9  in this Commonwealth; and
    10     WHEREAS, The Lance Armstrong Foundation and many others
    11  throughout this Commonwealth are committed to ensuring that all
    12  cancer patients are treated with compassion and respect and are
    13  provided with the tools and resources necessary to battle the
    14  physical, emotional and practical challenges of a cancer
    15  diagnosis; and
    16     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is home to Abramson Cancer Center
    17  of the University of Pennsylvania, Fox Chase Cancer Center,
    18  Kimmel Cancer Center, The Wistar Institute and the University of
    19  Pittsburgh Cancer Institute; and
    20     WHEREAS, "LiveStrong Day" exemplifies the spirit of people
    21  affected by cancer--survivors, caregivers, friends, family,
    22  physicians, nurses, social workers and researchers--throughout
    23  this Commonwealth; therefore be it
    24     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 18,
    25  2008, as "LiveStrong Day" in Pennsylvania in support of cancer
    26  awareness and commend the Lance Armstrong Foundation for its
    27  continued commitment to this important cause.
