INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 8, 2008
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of May 11 through 17, 2008, as 2 "Transportation Week" and recognizing May 16, 2008, as 3 "National Defense Transportation Day" in Pennsylvania. 4 WHEREAS, Throughout America's history, the transportation 5 system has played a profound role in the security and 6 development of this nation; and 7 WHEREAS, As early as the Revolutionary War, America's 8 merchant marine carried cargo to help defend national interests 9 and uphold democratic ideals; and 10 WHEREAS, In the 1800s, as many Americans migrated westward, 11 new roads and canals facilitated travel and trade, helping to 12 unify this young country and bolster its growing economy; and 13 WHEREAS, In the 20th century, few innovations had the far- 14 reaching effect on our society as the airplane, now a critical 15 part of the national defense and robust economy; and
1 WHEREAS, In 1953 "Transportation Week" was observed in the 2 city of Houston, Texas; and 3 WHEREAS, Nine additional Texas cities joined in the 4 observance the following year; and 5 WHEREAS, A national chairman was appointed in 1955 to what 6 had then become known as the Traffic Club International; and 7 WHEREAS, In 1959 a joint resolution was introduced, 8 proclaiming an annual "National Transportation Week" from a 9 House Judiciary subcommittee of the Congress of the United 10 States, with President Dwight D. Eisenhower signing the 11 resolution on May 20, 1960; and 12 WHEREAS, In 1962 President John F. Kennedy declared a 13 permanent date, and from that day forward, the week in May which 14 contains the third Friday is recognized as "National Defense 15 Transportation Day," with "National Maritime Day" on the 16 following Saturday; and 17 WHEREAS, The United States has more than 4 million miles of 18 roads and highways, an integral part of a $175 trillion 19 transportation infrastructure, which generates $175 billion in 20 economic activity annually for this country; therefore be it 21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 22 week of May 11 through 17, 2008, as "Transportation Week" and 23 recognize May 16, 2008, as "National Defense Transportation Day" 24 in Pennsylvania.
