INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 7, 2008
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating May 12, 2008, as "Classrooms for the Future Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Commonwealth high schools are currently preparing 4 the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs who will 5 compete for high-skill jobs in the global knowledge economy; and 6 WHEREAS, Today's high school students are members of the 7 "Technology Generation," who do best when given the opportunity 8 to engage in hands-on learning and exploration; and 9 WHEREAS, Successful students must be able to conduct 10 independent research, work in teams and engage in problem- 11 solving activities; and 12 WHEREAS, Classrooms for the Future is a high school reform
1 program that prepares students to succeed in a technology-rich 2 and information-rich world, giving students of this Commonwealth 3 a competitive advantage over students in other states; and 4 WHEREAS, Classrooms for the Future transforms the way high 5 school students learn by providing state-of-the-art laptops and 6 smart classrooms and training teachers to use technology to 7 improve their teaching; and 8 WHEREAS, By the end of this school year, Classrooms for the 9 Future will have placed 100,000 laptops in high school 10 classrooms and delivered more than 440,000 hours of intensive 11 teacher training; and 12 WHEREAS, An independent study found that Classrooms for the 13 Future leads to greater student engagement, an intensified focus 14 on problem solving and critical thinking and more frequent use 15 of effective teaching strategies; therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 12, 17 2008, as "Classrooms for the Future Day" in Pennsylvania in 18 recognition of the importance, for every high school student in 19 this Commonwealth, to be fully prepared to thrive in the 21st 20 century in college and careers.
