        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 27, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of April 2008 as "Pennsylvania Community
     2     College Month."

     3     WHEREAS, More than 445,000 students are enrolled in credit
     4  and noncredit programs at community colleges in this
     5  Commonwealth, with greater than four in nine credit students
     6  enrolled in science, technology, engineering or mathematics
     7  programs and 60% of credit students enrolled in transfer
     8  programs; and
     9     WHEREAS, Community colleges have developed more than 1,000
    10  articulation agreements to ensure that students seamlessly

     1  transition from the community college to a four-year university;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, Community colleges offer individualized credit and
     4  noncredit courses and programs that enhance the work force
     5  pipeline and stimulate this Commonwealth's economy; and
     6     WHEREAS, Community colleges offer and support dual enrollment
     7  of more than 5,400 high school students who represent half of
     8  this Commonwealth's school districts; and
     9     WHEREAS, More than 23,500 students are enrolled in more than
    10  1,100 distance learning courses and programs offered by the
    11  community colleges so that students can build their academic
    12  credentials and certifications while maintaining their work
    13  schedules and family responsibilities; and
    14     WHEREAS, Community colleges offer work force development and
    15  public safety training throughout this Commonwealth, focusing on
    16  industry clusters and high priority occupations; and
    17     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's emergent and incumbent work
    18  force obtains and renews required certifications through
    19  community colleges; and
    20     WHEREAS, Community colleges facilitate high-tech career
    21  pathways with seamless curriculums by collaborating in 2+2+2
    22  project grants; therefore be it
    23     RESOLVED, That, in special recognition of community colleges
    24  and their exemplary role in work force development in this
    25  Commonwealth, the House of Representatives designate the month
    26  of April 2008 as "Pennsylvania Community College Month" and
    27  encourage all citizens to recognize, appreciate and support the
    28  contributions these institutions make to their communities and
    29  this Commonwealth.
