        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 17, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the observance of "International Day for the
     2     Elimination of Racial Discrimination" on March 21, 2008, and
     3     embracing the goal of the United Nations.

     4     WHEREAS, On March 21, 1960, police opened fire and killed 69
     5  people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid in
     6  Sharpeville, South Africa; and
     7     WHEREAS, In 1966, the United Nations proclaimed that March 21
     8  would henceforth be observed as "International Day for the
     9  Elimination of Racial Discrimination"; and
    10     WHEREAS, The United Nations calls upon all nations to
    11  redouble their efforts to eliminate all forms of racial
    12  discrimination, this day and always; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    14  observance of March 21, 2008, as "International Day for the
    15  Elimination of Racial Discrimination" and embrace its goal
    16  within this Commonwealth.
