        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 12, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring The Pennsylvania State University students who raised
     2     more than six million dollars for The Four Diamonds Fund.

     3     WHEREAS, THON is the more commonly referred to name of the
     4  Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, the largest student
     5  run philanthropy in the world; and
     6     WHEREAS, THON has raised more than $52 million; and
     7     WHEREAS, The THON dance marathon event was held at the
     8  University Park campus February 22 through 24, 2008. More than
     9  700 dancers and 15,000 student volunteers packed the Bryce
    10  Jordan Center for the event; and
    11     WHEREAS, Overall, this year's Penn State THON event reached a
    12  new milestone by raising $6,615,318.04 for children who have

     1  cancer and their families; and
     2     WHEREAS, THON is a year-round fundraising event benefiting
     3  The Four Diamonds Fund, which is striving to conquer childhood
     4  cancer by assisting children treated at Penn State Children's
     5  Hospital and their families through superior care, comprehensive
     6  support and innovative research. The fundraising culminates in
     7  the no sitting, no sleeping, 46-hour dance marathon held every
     8  February; and
     9     WHEREAS, There are various other sources or funding for THON,
    10  including;
    11         (1)  High school and middle school mini-THONs (patterned
    12     after the large PSU Dance Marathon of shorter "dance" time
    13     i.e. 8-12 hours;
    14         (2)  Penn State and THON Alumini contributions called
    15     "Can appeal";
    16         (3)  Collections at the highway intersections by the
    17     service clubs;
    18         (4)  Corporate donations;
    19         (5)  5 K Run to raise money;
    20         (6)  THON express where a group of marathon runners run
    21     from Hershey to State College on THON weekend;
    22         (7)  Raffles such as Pontiac car on THON weekend;
    23         (8)  Raffle for very nice trips such as a trip to
    24     England;
    25         (9)  Each Greek organization that is involved does their
    26     own fund raising;
    27         (10)  Dance Marathon Alumni Interest Group (DMAIG), whose
    28     sole purpose is to raise money for THON and public awareness,
    29     holds regional fund raising events throughout the State;
    30  therefore be it

     1     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the
     2  Pennsylvania State University students who raised more than six
     3  million dollars for The Four Diamonds Fund.
