        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 12, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating the American Cancer Society for its commitment to
     2     research and public service and designating the week of March
     3     24 through 30, 2008, as "Daffodil Days Awareness Week" in
     4     Pennsylvania.

     5     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society is the largest source of
     6  private, nonprofit cancer research funds in the United States,
     7  second only to the Federal Government in dollars spent; and
     8     WHEREAS, To date, the American Cancer Society has invested $3
     9  billion in cancer research, including current grants of $29.6
    10  million in this Commonwealth as of September, 2007; and
    11     WHEREAS, This investment in research is paying off, with more


     1  than 66% of male cancer patients surviving for the least five
     2  years after cancer diagnosis and 63% of women surviving at least
     3  five years after cancer diagnosis; and
     4     WHEREAS, Over the years and with funds raised from Daffodil
     5  Days, the American Cancer Society has made great strides in
     6  cancer research, including funding scientists who have
     7  discovered the Papanicolaou test, bone marrow transplant
     8  techniques, tamoxifen and Gleevec; and
     9     WHEREAS, Daffodil Days is one of the American Cancer
    10  Society's oldest fundraising programs and for 35 years has
    11  helped to empower people to make a difference in the fight
    12  against cancer; and
    13     WHEREAS, Forty Nobel Prize winners were funded by the
    14  American Cancer Society at some point in their career; and
    15     WHEREAS, Approximately 75,130 people were diagnosed with
    16  cancer last year and approximately 29,140 people succumbed due
    17  to cancer in this Commonwealth in 2007; and
    18     WHEREAS, One in every two men and one in every three women
    19  will develop cancer, therefore, it is imperative for the
    20  American Cancer Society to continue to expand flower sales and
    21  volunteer participation in Daffodil Days so that everyone can
    22  continue to work together toward a cancer-free society;
    23  therefore be it
    24     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
    25  American Cancer Society for its commitment to research and
    26  public service and designate the week of March 24 through 30,
    27  2008, as "Daffodil Days Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
