INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 10, 2008
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the National Rifle Association of America for its 2 diligence and services in developing the Eddie Eagle GunSafe 3 Program and celebrating the program's 20th anniversary. 4 WHEREAS, The most precious and valuable asset of the 5 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the nation is children, and we 6 must dedicate ourselves, our energy and our resources to nurture 7 and protect these most vulnerable individuals; and 8 WHEREAS, Teaching children to act safely around firearms is a 9 critical effort to reduce the number of firearm-related 10 accidents among children; and 11 WHEREAS, The National Rifle Association of America, committed 12 to keeping children safe from guns, created the Eddie Eagle 13 GunSafe Program, designed to teach the fundamentals of firearm
1 safety to children in an effective and enjoyable way, 2 communicating to them the lifesaving message offered by the 3 program: If you see a gun: STOP! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. 4 Tell an Adult; and 5 WHEREAS, The nationally recognized Eddie Eagle GunSafe 6 Program has been used by more than 26,000 public or private 7 schools, law enforcement agencies and civic organizations, and 8 it has reached 21 million children since 1988; and 9 WHEREAS, The Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program has been endorsed or 10 recommended by numerous groups, such as the National Sheriff's 11 Association, the United States Department of Justice and the 12 Association of American Educators, as well as 23 state 13 legislatures and 26 state Governors; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 15 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognize the National Rifle 16 Association of America for its diligence and services in 17 developing the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program and celebrate the 18 program's 20th anniversary; and be it further 19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the 20 civic and community organizations which are concerned about the 21 safety and well-being of the children of this Commonwealth to 22 help provide funding for the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program at the 23 local level; and be it further 24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the 25 Pennsylvania Department of Education to promote the use of the 26 Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program in our schools to help prevent 27 firearm-related accidents among children; and be it further 28 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 29 the National Rifle Association of America and the Pennsylvania 30 Department of Education.
