A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the month of October 2008 as "Breast Cancer 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Women's health is essential to the health of our 4 families, our communities and our society; and 5 WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the most common cancer among 6 American women; and 7 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 182,460 8 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 67,770 new cases of 9 carcinoma in situ of the breast will be diagnosed in women in
1 the United States in 2008; and 2 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition reports 3 that approximately 9,500 women in this Commonwealth are 4 diagnosed with breast cancer each year; and 5 WHEREAS, Early detection can give women a five-year survival 6 rate of 97%; and 7 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society reports that the rates 8 of dying from breast cancer have been declining since 1990; and 9 WHEREAS, The decline in death rates is believed to be the 10 result of increased awareness, earlier detection through 11 screening and improved treatment; and 12 WHEREAS, Clinical breast examinations, regular mammograms and 13 breast self-examinations are the best means of detecting breast 14 cancer; and 15 WHEREAS, There are more than two million breast cancer 16 survivors in the United States today; and 17 WHEREAS, Throughout the United States and this Commonwealth, 18 the American Cancer Society, the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer 19 Coalition and other national, state and local organizations are 20 working to raise funds, increase public awareness and support 21 women with breast cancer; therefore be it 22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 23 month of October 2008 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in 24 Pennsylvania to applaud the thousands of professionals and 25 volunteers in the fight against breast cancer and to encourage 26 all women to utilize screening services for early detection.
