        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           DECEMBER 11, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing with pride Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy
     2     Rollins' winning of the 2007 National League Most Valuable
     3     Player award, as well as his work involving African-American
     4     youth in the game of baseball.

     5     WHEREAS, Jimmy Rollins was named the 2007 National League
     6  Most Valuable Player, finishing first place in balloting by the
     7  Baseball Writers' Association of America, ahead of Colorado
     8  Rockies left fielder Matt Holliday and Milwaukee Brewers first
     9  baseman Prince Fielder; and
    10     WHEREAS, Mr. Rollins was also the recipient of the 2007 Gold
    11  Glove and Silver Slugger awards; and
    12     WHEREAS, Mr. Rollins was instrumental in the Philadelphia
    13  Phillies' winning of the 2007 National League East Division; and

     1     WHEREAS, During the 2007 season, Mr. Rollins had 212 hits, 38
     2  doubles, 20 triples, 30 home runs, 94 runs batted in and 41
     3  stolen bases, finishing the season with a batting average of
     4  .296; and
     5     WHEREAS, Mr. Rollins is the first player in the history of
     6  baseball to have at least 200 hits, 15 triples, 25 home runs and
     7  25 stolen bases in a single season; and
     8     WHEREAS, Mr. Rollins is the third shortstop in baseball
     9  history to have at least 30 stolen bases and 30 home runs in a
    10  season; and
    11     WHEREAS, Mr. Rollins is only the fourth player in baseball
    12  history to have at least 20 stolen bases, 20 doubles, 20 triples
    13  and 20 home runs in a season; and
    14     WHEREAS, Mr. Rollins also set league records for a shortstop
    15  with 139 runs scored and 88 extra base hits; and
    16     WHEREAS, Mr. Rollins led the league with 63 triples and
    17  multiple hit games; and
    18     WHEREAS, Mr. Rollins set a major league record of 716 at-
    19  bats, starting for all of the Phillies' 162 games and playing in
    20  nearly every inning of each game; and
    21     WHEREAS, Due to his remarkable achievements on the baseball
    22  field and his role as a community leader, Mr. Rollins has played
    23  an integral role in revitalizing the interest in baseball among
    24  African-American youths; and
    25     WHEREAS, Mr. Rollins is the fifth Philadelphia Phillies
    26  player to receive the Most Valuable Player award, his
    27  predecessors being Chuck Klein, Jim Konstanty, Mike Schmidt and
    28  Ryan Howard; therefore be it
    29     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize with
    30  pride Jimmy Rollins' winning of the 2007 National League Most

     1  Valuable Player award for his outstanding 2007 baseball season,
     2  as well as his contributions to revitalizing the interest in
     3  baseball among African-American youths.
