        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           DECEMBER 6, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Noting with sadness the passing of Philadelphia Common Pleas
     2     Court Judge Lisa Aversa Richette, senior Family Court judge
     3     and longtime child welfare and juvenile justice champion, on
     4     October 26, 2007, at 79 years of age.

     5     WHEREAS, Ms. Richette was a founder of the nonprofit Child
     6  Abuse Prevention Effort and a Pearl S. Buck International Woman
     7  of the Year honoree and Philadelphia Bar Association Beccaria
     8  Award honoree; and
     9     WHEREAS, Ms. Richette attained distinction as an assistant
    10  district attorney, judge, teacher, social activist and author,
    11  in 1969, of "The Throwaway Children"; and
    12     WHEREAS, Born on September 11, 1928, in South Philadelphia,
    13  Ms. Richette was a graduate of Philadelphia High School for
    14  Girls and the University of Pennsylvania; and
    15     WHEREAS, In 1952 Ms. Richette graduated with honors from Yale


     1  Law School; and
     2     WHEREAS, Ms. Richette's experiences, while a law student, at
     3  the Yale Study Unit Research Center for Psychiatry and Law
     4  launched her lifelong advocacy for at-risk children and persons
     5  with mental illness; and
     6     WHEREAS, In 1971 Governor Milton Shapp appointed Ms. Richette
     7  to the Common Pleas Court; and
     8     WHEREAS, Ms. Richette demonstrated her commitment to social
     9  justice through her work with the juvenile courts, and her
    10  advocacy continued as she openly sought treatment for clinical
    11  depression; and
    12     WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, Ms. Richette prepared and
    13  delivered food to homeless persons on behalf of the Sisters of
    14  Mercy in Center City; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives note with sadness
    16  the passing of Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Lisa Aversa
    17  Richette on October 26, 2007, at 79 years of age.
