A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the life and heroic death of United States Army Air 2 Corps Staff Sergeant Robert Flood, who paid the supreme 3 sacrifice on July 7, 1944, when his B-24 bomber was shot down 4 over Bernburg, Germany. 5 WHEREAS, In 2003, German archaeologist Eurico Schwartz 6 discovered the remains of the crew of a B-24 United States Army 7 Air Corps bomber that was shot down over Bernburg, Germany; and 8 WHEREAS, The identity of the remains was unknown until DNA 9 taken from suspected and potential survivors was compared with 10 the DNA of the remains; and 11 WHEREAS, On Father's Day 2007, Sgt. Flood's family learned
1 that his remains had been recovered and were being sent home for 2 burial; and 3 WHEREAS, Until that point, Sgt. Flood's family had believed 4 that his plane was lost over the English Channel and hence was 5 unrecoverable; and 6 WHEREAS, Twice before, Sgt. Flood's planes had crashed, once 7 in England on May 11, 1944, and once on June 15, 1944, and after 8 the June 15 crash, Sgt. Flood and his surviving crew mates, with 9 the help of French citizens, made it back to American lines; and 10 WHEREAS, Sgt. Flood grew up on a farm in Huntingdon County 11 and was a 1941 graduate of Orbisonia High School; and 12 WHEREAS, Sgt. Flood enlisted in the Army Air Corps while 13 employed at the Letterkenny Army Depot near Chambersburg; and 14 WHEREAS, Sgt. Flood was laid to rest in Upper Tuscarora 15 Valley Cemetery and was given full military honors and an 16 honorary flyover by a United States Air Force KC-767 tanker 17 transport aircraft; and 18 WHEREAS, Sgt. Flood is survived by his brother, Richard, and 19 by several nieces; and 20 WHEREAS, It is fitting for Pennsylvanians to pay homage to a 21 war hero for his courageous service to our nation; therefore be 22 it 23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life 24 and heroic death of United States Army Air Corps Staff Sergeant 25 Robert Flood, who paid the supreme sacrifice on July 7, 1944, 26 when his B-24 bomber was shot down over Bernburg, Germany.
