                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the broad benefits of music education in the schools
     2     of this Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, According to the National Association for Music
     4  Education, every child requires music education; and
     5     WHEREAS, Music study and performance enriches the social,
     6  developmental and cultural experiences of all students for whom
     7  school music programs with qualified teachers are available; and
     8     WHEREAS, Students in high-quality school music programs score
     9  higher on standardized tests, regardless of the socioeconomic
    10  status of their school or school district; and
    11     WHEREAS, Children with music training have significantly
    12  better verbal memory than other students; and
    13     WHEREAS, Secondary students participating in band or
    14  orchestra are less likely than other students to abuse drugs or


     1  alcohol; and
     2     WHEREAS, Choral singers are more likely than other students
     3  to contribute to charity work as volunteers or donors; and
     4     WHEREAS, The skills and discipline students acquire through
     5  music study are valuable in meeting the challenges of the school
     6  environment and in lifelong learning; and
     7     WHEREAS, The skills and discipline students acquire through
     8  music study are crucial to the productivity and competitiveness
     9  of our nation's work force; and
    10     WHEREAS, The House of Representatives joins the Pennsylvania
    11  Music Educators Association in full support of strengthening
    12  music education in our schools and communities; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    14  broad benefits of music education in the schools of this
    15  Commonwealth.
