A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing Al Gore as the recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace 2 Prize. 3 WHEREAS, On October 12, 2007, Al Gore was awarded the Nobel 4 Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 5 (IPCC), a United Nations network of scientists; and 6 WHEREAS, The Nobel Prize is an international award for 7 notable achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or 8 medicine, literature and for peace administered by the Nobel 9 Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden, since 1901; and 10 WHEREAS, The Norwegian Nobel Committee is seeking to 11 contribute to a sharper focus on the processes and decisions 12 that may be necessary to protect the world's future climate and 13 thereby reduce the threat to mankind's security before climate 14 change moves beyond man's control; and 15 WHEREAS, The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Mr. Gore and
1 the IPCC "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater 2 knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the 3 foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such 4 change"; and 5 WHEREAS, The Norwegian Nobel Committee called Mr. Gore 6 "probably the single individual who has done most to create 7 greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be 8 adopted" in regard to climate change through his political 9 activity, lectures, films and books; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Gore's documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth," 11 which details the threat of and solutions to global warming, 12 received two Oscars in 2006; and 13 WHEREAS, Current TV, a television network for young people, 14 which he cofounded and of which he serves as chairman, received 15 an Emmy for 2007; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Gore is a member of the Board of Directors of 17 Apple Computer, Inc., a Senior Advisor to Google, Inc., a 18 Visiting Professor at Middle Tennessee State University, and he 19 has previously served as Vice President of the United States, a 20 United States Senator and a member of the United States House of 21 Representatives; and 22 WHEREAS, Mr. Gore plans to donate his Nobel Peace Prize money 23 to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a nonprofit organization 24 of which he is founder and chairman; therefore be it 25 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 26 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognize Al Gore as the recipient 27 of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize as well as for his outstanding 28 work to raise awareness about global warming; and be it further 29 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to Al 30 Gore.
