INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 22, 2007
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of November 2007 as "Pulmonary 2 Hypertension Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The health of our citizens is the foundation of a 4 caring and productive society; and 5 WHEREAS, Our future rests with our ability to find treatment 6 and cures for a variety of illnesses, including pulmonary 7 hypertension; and 8 WHEREAS, Pulmonary hypertension is a rare blood vessel 9 disorder that causes high blood pressure levels in the arteries 10 between the lungs and the heart; and 11 WHEREAS, Pulmonary hypertension causes pulmonary arteries to 12 tighten up, constricting the flow of blood to the lungs and
1 making the heart pump harder, which leads to an enlarged heart; 2 and 3 WHEREAS, Because of the low survival rate, pulmonary 4 hypertension has historically been referred to as a fatal 5 disease, but early diagnosis can lead to early treatment and the 6 possibility of improved quality and length of life; and 7 WHEREAS, Pulmonary hypertension is frequently misdiagnosed 8 because of its symptomatic similarities to a minor pulmonary or 9 cardiovascular condition; and 10 WHEREAS, Recent research indicates that the length of 11 survival is continuing to improve, with some patients able to 12 manage the disease 15 to 20 years or longer; and 13 WHEREAS, With increased funding and more research, there can 14 be a better life expectancy for those individuals living with 15 pulmonary hypertension; and 16 WHEREAS, The Pulmonary Hypertension Association is dedicated 17 to improving the quality of life for persons with this disease, 18 raising awareness in the medical community of the need for early 19 diagnosis and educating the general public; and 20 WHEREAS, Residents of this Commonwealth and the medical 21 community can work together to spread awareness about pulmonary 22 hypertension and to ensure that research and improved treatments 23 are in place; therefore be it 24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 25 month of November 2007 as "Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness 26 Month" in Pennsylvania and urge the residents of this 27 Commonwealth to learn more about pulmonary hypertension and 28 recognize the seriousness of this disease and the meritorious 29 work of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association to find a cure; 30 and be it further 20070H0471R2696 - 2 -
