4 caring and productive society; and
5 WHEREAS, Our future rests with our ability to find treatment
6 and cures for a variety of illnesses, including pulmonary
     7 hypertension; and
8 WHEREAS, Pulmonary hypertension is a rare blood vessel
9 disorder that causes high blood pressure levels in the arteries
10 between the lungs and the heart; and
11 WHEREAS, Pulmonary hypertension causes pulmonary arteries to
12 tighten up, constricting the flow of blood to the lungs and

     1  making the heart pump harder, which leads to an enlarged heart;
     2 and
3 WHEREAS, Because of the low survival rate, pulmonary
4 hypertension has historically been referred to as a fatal
5 disease, but early diagnosis can lead to early treatment and the
6 possibility of improved quality and length of life; and
7 WHEREAS, Pulmonary hypertension is frequently misdiagnosed
8 because of its symptomatic similarities to a minor pulmonary or
     9 cardiovascular condition; and
10 WHEREAS, Recent research indicates that the length of
11 survival is continuing to improve, with some patients able to
12 manage the disease 15 to 20 years or longer; and
13 WHEREAS, With increased funding and more research, there can
14 be a better life expectancy for those individuals living with
    15 pulmonary hypertension; and
16 WHEREAS, The Pulmonary Hypertension Association is dedicated
17 to improving the quality of life for persons with this disease,
18 raising awareness in the medical community of the need for early
19 diagnosis and educating the general public; and
20 WHEREAS, Residents of this Commonwealth and the medical
21 community can work together to spread awareness about pulmonary
22 hypertension and to ensure that research and improved treatments
