A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the week of November 11 through 17, 2007, as 2 "National Geography Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania and 3 designating November 15, 2007, as "Pennsylvania GIS Day." 4 WHEREAS, A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer 5 system of application capable of capturing, storing, analyzing 6 and displaying geographically referenced information; and 7 WHEREAS, The information in GIS applications can include 8 street addresses, municipal boundaries, streams and watersheds, 9 labor markets, land use zones, property boundaries, public 10 utilities, census tracts, transportation networks, oil and gas 11 well locations, wildlife management areas and more; and 12 WHEREAS, GIS applications are used for business management, 13 homeland security, public health, land use planning, labor 14 market analysis, transportation, environmental protection, 15 agriculture, law enforcement and economic development; and
1 WHEREAS, GIS applications relay information in a spatial 2 context, allowing users to analyze complex spatial 3 relationships; and 4 WHEREAS, GIS is an objective decision-making tool which is 5 becoming increasingly useful for private industry and 6 governmental entities; and 7 WHEREAS, The United States Department of Labor has identified 8 geospatial technology, including GIS, as one of the three 9 technologies with the greatest potential for growth and job 10 creation; and 11 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is a leader in geospatial technology 12 research and training and possesses many of the leading 13 geospatial technology firms in the United States; and 14 WHEREAS, Investment in geospatial technology by government, 15 private industry and academia will keep this Commonwealth in the 16 forefront of the industry; therefore be it 17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 18 week of November 11 through 17, 2007, as "National Geography 19 Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania and designate November 15, 2007, 20 as "Pennsylvania GIS Day."
