A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of September 2007 as "Emergency 2 Preparedness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Each year, disaster strikes communities across the 4 world, causing individuals to flee their homes, often with very 5 little advance warning; and 6 WHEREAS, Thousands of Americans are displaced by disasters 7 every year, many of them elderly and infirm; and 8 WHEREAS, In 2005 alone, the American Red Cross helped victims 9 of almost 75,000 disasters across the United States; and 10 WHEREAS, Disasters come in many forms, from natural disasters 11 like Hurricane Katrina to those which are man-made, like the 12 attacks of September 11, 2001; and
1 WHEREAS, The American Red Cross encourages individuals to 2 have emergency preparedness kits on hand should disaster strike; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, Recent information indicates that 69% of Americans 5 living in hurricane-prone states do not have a disaster supplies 6 kit and 60% lack an evacuation plan; and 7 WHEREAS, Chapters of the American Red Cross nationwide will 8 conduct outreach programs throughout September aimed at helping 9 schools, families, individuals and businesses become "Red Cross 10 Ready" for all types of disasters and emergencies by getting a 11 kit, making a plan and being informed; and 12 WHEREAS, The American Red Cross has been joined by the United 13 States Department of Homeland Security, the AARP, the National 14 Organization on Disability and the National Fire Protection 15 Agency to ensure that all Americans are prepared for all 16 emergencies; and 17 WHEREAS, Being prepared for emergencies has saved the lives 18 of countless Americans in every kind of disaster; therefore be 19 it 20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 21 month of September 2007 as "Emergency Preparedness Month" in 22 Pennsylvania.
