        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 21, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the Harford Agricultural Society of Harford,
     2     Susquehanna County, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary
     3     of the Harford Fair.

     4     WHEREAS, The Harford Agricultural Society is holding its
     5  annual fair during the third full week of August; and
     6     WHEREAS, Approximately 65,000 visitors from near and far come
     7  to celebrate this longstanding tradition; and
     8     WHEREAS, The fair is celebrating its 150th anniversary the
     9  week of August 20 through 25, 2007; and
    10     WHEREAS, The Harford Agricultural Society held its first
    11  fair, with 76 members, on November 9, 1858, in the sheds around
    12  the First Congregational Church; and
    13     WHEREAS, The one-day event was moved to October a few years

     1  later; and
     2     WHEREAS, The fair became a two-day event in 1865; and
     3     WHEREAS, In 1880, the 117-acre fairgrounds hosted 1,000 teams
     4  of oxen and 3,500 people; and
     5     WHEREAS, While the acreage has remained the same, the number
     6  of exhibitors, visitors and entertainers has grown, as has the
     7  length of the fair; and
     8     WHEREAS, The fair is now a six-day event with 23 different
     9  departments; and
    10     WHEREAS, Last year's fair featured 1,539 exhibitors
    11  displaying 7,519 items for competition; and
    12     WHEREAS, There are 209 commercial vendors who display their
    13  wares as well; and
    14     WHEREAS, The 150th Celebration Planning Committee along with
    15  the 12 members of the board of directors, the fair secretary and
    16  the office staff have worked diligently to make the event truly
    17  memorable; and
    18     WHEREAS, In addition to the popular annual events of the
    19  rodeo, horse and tractor pulls, woodsmen's contest and
    20  demolition derby, new attractions providing old-fashioned fun
    21  include a women's skillet throw, men's hay bale toss, children's
    22  greased pole contest, male and female wheelbarrow race and
    23  watermelon bubble-bursting contest; and
    24     WHEREAS, From infant to octogenarian, there is something for
    25  everyone at the Harford Fair; therefore be it
    26     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Harford
    27  Agricultural Society of Harford, Susquehanna County, on the
    28  occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Harford Fair.
