A RESOLUTION 1 Designating June 23, 2007, as "Jimmy Buffett Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Jimmy Buffett is a world-class entertainer known for 4 his support of charitable and environmental causes throughout 5 the world; and 6 WHEREAS, Growing up the son of a sea captain in Mobile, 7 Alabama, Jimmy Buffet began his professional music career upon 8 graduation from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1969; 9 and 10 WHEREAS, After hitting the Nashville scene in the early 11 1970s, Jimmy Buffet eventually drifted south to Key West, 12 Florida, where he gradually evolved into the tranquil beach 13 character revered by millions of adoring fans; and 14 WHEREAS, Jimmy Buffett's breakthrough came in 1977 with his 15 album "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" and his well- 16 known Top Ten hit "Margaritaville"; and
1 WHEREAS, Beloved by the faithful fans who turn out year after 2 year for his consistently sold-out concerts, Jimmy Buffett lets 3 his Gulf Coast persona shine through in his music and helps 4 others escape life's twists and turns for a short time; and 5 WHEREAS, Jimmy Buffet's enjoyable music and good-natured 6 personality attract music lovers from all backgrounds; and 7 WHEREAS, Devoted followers of Jimmy Buffett banded together 8 in 1989 to form Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc., an international 9 philantropic network that engages in activities to promote the 10 general welfare of communities and the environment; and 11 WHEREAS, Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc., has established more 12 than 216 clubs around the world and has a membership totaling 13 more than 25,000 in 47 states as well as Canada and Australia; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, The Parrot Heads motto, "Party with a Purpose," 16 depicts members' love of Jimmy Buffett's music and their desire 17 to make a positive impact on the world; and 18 WHEREAS, In 2006, local Pennsylvania chapters raised more 19 than $2.6 million and volunteered 173,000 volunteer hours to 20 local and national charities; and 21 WHEREAS, In the past five years Parrot Heads in Paradise, 22 Inc., has raised more than $10.5 million and members have 23 volunteered almost 1.8 million hours; and 24 WHEREAS, There are currently nine Parrot Head chapters in 25 Pennsylvania whose members are die-hard Jimmy Buffett fans and 26 dedicated community servants: at one of the major events in 27 2006, Parrot Heads collectively donated nearly $50,000 in 28 decorations and merchandise for a tailgate party held on Labor 29 Day as a tribute and thank you to our troops stationed overseas; 30 and 20070H0333R1929 - 2 -
1 WHEREAS, Charitable organizations such as the Alzheimer's 2 Association, Animal Friends, the Down's Syndrome Group, Make-A- 3 Wish Foundation, the Multiple Sclerosis Service Society, the 4 Muscular Dystrophy Association, Ronald McDonald House and Wings 5 for Children have benefited from the actions and support of the 6 nine Parrot Head clubs in this Commonwealth; and 7 WHEREAS, More than 1,500 active Pennsylvania Parrot Heads 8 join all citizens of this Commonwealth in welcoming Jimmy 9 Buffett to the Post-Gazette Pavilion in Burgettstown on June 23, 10 2007; therefore be it 11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June 12 23, 2007, as "Jimmy Buffett Day" in Pennsylvania.
