INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 5, 2007
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of November 2007 as "Pancreatic Cancer 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The good health and well-being of the residents of 4 this Commonwealth are enhanced as a direct result of efforts to 5 spread awareness about pancreatic cancer and increase research 6 on early detection, causes and effective treatments; and 7 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth is pleased to join in recognizing 8 and applauding the valuable role of families and advocates for 9 persons with pancreatic cancer in helping our medical 10 institution advance the fight against pancreatic cancer; and 11 WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of
1 cancer death among men and women in the United States; and 2 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 37,170 3 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer during 2007; 4 and 5 WHEREAS, An estimated 33,370 Americans will die of pancreatic 6 cancer in 2007; and 7 WHEREAS, Only 4% of pancreatic cancer patients survive five 8 years after diagnosis; and 9 WHEREAS, There is no cure for pancreatic cancer and no 10 screening to detect early pancreatic cancer; and 11 WHEREAS, The average life expectancy after diagnosis is three 12 to six months; and 13 WHEREAS, Despite the especially lethal nature of pancreatic 14 cancer, the Federal Government invests less money in pancreatic 15 cancer research than in research for all other leading cancers; 16 and 17 WHEREAS, It is essential that we work together to support 18 efforts to find ways to attack this deadly disease; therefore be 19 it 20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 21 month of November 2007 as "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" in 22 Pennsylvania.
