A RESOLUTION 1 Memorializing the anniversary of the D-Day invasion of France 2 and honoring the heroic efforts of the servicemen who fought 3 and those who lost their lives on June 6, 1944, as Allied 4 Forces stormed the beaches of Normandy. 5 WHEREAS, On June 6, 1944, the American, British, Canadian and 6 French Allied Forces of World War II set sail from England 7 across the turbulent, frigid waters of the English Channel to 8 launch an invasion of continental Europe; and 9 WHEREAS, Three years of strategic planning produced the D-Day 10 assault on the beaches of Normandy, France, to liberate France 11 and overthrow Nazi Germany; and 12 WHEREAS, On the night of June 5, 1944, more than 900 planes 13 and 100 gliders of the United States Ninth Air Force ascended
1 from British fields, carrying parachute jumpers from the 82nd 2 and 101st Divisions; and 3 WHEREAS, In the early hours of June 6, 1944, the huge armada 4 of 1,796 vessels, including 931 American ships, moved across the 5 English Channel; and 6 WHEREAS, Approximately 150,000 soldiers, including 57,300 7 American men, landed at Normandy, and 15,000 American 8 paratroopers descended during D-Day; and 9 WHEREAS, Approximately 6,000 Americans were killed or 10 wounded, many being met with deadly machine-gun fire as they 11 came ashore; and 12 WHEREAS, Courage and faith in their mission enabled these 13 servicemen to complete the D-Day assault, which was the 14 beginning of the end for Adolph Hitler and the Third Reich; and 15 WHEREAS, It is fitting to remember the sacrifice of these men 16 on this historic occasion; therefore be it 17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives memorialize the 18 anniversary of the D-Day invasion of France and honor the heroic 19 efforts of the servicemen who fought and those who lost their 20 lives on June 6, 1944, as Allied Forces stormed the beaches of 21 Normandy.
