A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing May 25, 2007, as "National Missing Children's Day" 2 in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, On May 25, 1979, six-year-old Etan Patz of New York 4 City disappeared while walking to the bus stop on his way to 5 school; and 6 WHEREAS, The ensuing search for Etan Patz became the first 7 nationally televised missing-child event to capture America's 8 attention; and 9 WHEREAS, From 1979 to 1981 there were a number of high- 10 profile, missing-child incidents, from Etan Patz to the Atlanta 11 child murders, to Adam Walsh, the son of John Walsh, host of 12 America's Most Wanted"; and 13 WHEREAS, As the nation became painfully aware of these
1 horrific crimes against children, the stories of these children 2 served as a catalyst for national legislation to aid in the 3 search and recovery of missing children; and 4 WHEREAS, In 1983 President Ronald Reagan honored the memory 5 of all missing children by proclaiming that May 25, the day Etan 6 Patz disappeared, be observed each year as "National Missing 7 Children's Day"; and 8 WHEREAS, Every subsequent administration to date has honored 9 this proclamation; and 10 WHEREAS, Etan Patz has never been found; and 11 WHEREAS, There are more than 2,000 children reported missing 12 every day in the United States and 58,000 child abductions by 13 strangers every year; and 14 WHEREAS, The problem of missing children in the United States 15 is often a tragically low priority; therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize May 25, 17 2007, as "National Missing Children's Day" in Pennsylvania.
