INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 22, 2007
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of September 2007 as "Prostate Cancer 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society reports that prostate 4 cancer is the most common type of cancer, other than skin 5 cancer, diagnosed among men in the nation and estimates that 6 prostate cancer will afflict 218,890 men in 2007, 12,230 of 7 which are in Pennsylvania; and 8 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society reports that prostate 9 cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in 10 the nation, causing an estimated 27,050 deaths in 2007, 1,310 of 11 which are in Pennsylvania; and
1 WHEREAS, The National Cancer Institute reports that 2 Pennsylvania is among the top five states with new cases in 3 2007; and 4 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that men have 5 a 1 in 6 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer in their 6 lifetime; and 7 WHEREAS, The risk of developing prostate cancer rises sharply 8 after age 50 and doubles every ten years thereafter; and 9 WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is twice as common among African- 10 American men; and 11 WHEREAS, Early detection and screening for prostate cancer 12 are vital to combating the disease, especially for men more than 13 50 years of age, African-American men and men with a family 14 history of prostate cancer; and 15 WHEREAS, With early detection, the five-year relative 16 survival rate for men with localized prostate cancer is 100%; 17 and 18 WHEREAS, Greater public awareness and education about 19 prostate cancer is necessary to help protect the health and 20 welfare of men; therefore be it 21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 22 month of September 2007 as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in 23 Pennsylvania and encourage all men to educate themselves about 24 the risk of prostate cancer.
