A RESOLUTION 1 Acknowledging a dire situation relating to the devastation of 2 the honeybee population in this Commonwealth. 3 WHEREAS, Scientists estimate that the honeybee population has 4 dropped 80%; and 5 WHEREAS, Scientists believe the shrinking honeybee population 6 is directly related to a pathogen or toxic substance which 7 weakens bees on their main spring flights and makes their return 8 to the hive impossible; and 9 WHEREAS, Scientists have named this epidemic colony collapse 10 disorder (CCD); and 11 WHEREAS, CCD is affecting a crucial sector of the State and 12 national economies; and 13 WHEREAS, A Cornell University study has estimated that 14 honeybees annually pollinate more than $14 billion worth of
1 seeds and crops in the United States; and 2 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State University, the Pennsylvania 3 Department of Agriculture, the University of North Carolina and 4 the State of Texas are leading research into the cause of the 5 honeybee population decline; therefore be it 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge a 7 dire situation relating to the devastation of the honeybee 8 population in this Commonwealth; and be it further 9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives applaud efforts 10 to preserve the honeybee population and urge support for 11 continuing research.
