A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the week of May 6 through 12, 2007, as "National 2 Postcard Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Long before the days of e-mail and facsimiles, 4 postcards delivered scenes of faraway places and greetings to 5 family and friends across the country; and 6 WHEREAS, The United States Postal Service began to issue 7 plain, stamped mailing cards in 1873; and 8 WHEREAS, Within 20 years a company sold "souvenir cards," 9 which included a picture on the front and a space for the 10 address but no message on the back; and 11 WHEREAS, In 1907 the United States Postal Service allowed 12 postcard designers to divide the back of postcards so that 13 people sending them could place both an address and a message on 14 them; and
1 WHEREAS, For many people, postcards become keepsakes; and 2 WHEREAS, Sending picture postcards through the mail in this 3 country is a custom participated in by millions of its citizens, 4 and collecting postcards has developed into a hobby for many 5 people; and 6 WHEREAS, The leisure pastime of collecting and studying 7 postcards, known as deltiology, has led to the formation of 106 8 postcard clubs in the United States and more than 100 postcard 9 shows annually; therefore be it 10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 11 week of May 6 through 12, 2007, as "National Postcard Week" in 12 Pennsylvania.
