INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 7, 2007
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating May 16, 2007, as "LiveStrong Day" in Pennsylvania in 2 support of cancer awareness and commending the Lance 3 Armstrong Foundation for its continued commitment to cancer- 4 related issues. 5 WHEREAS, According to the Department of Health and the 6 University of Pittsburgh, cancer is the second leading cause of 7 death in this Commonwealth; and 8 WHEREAS, Three out of four people in their lifetimes will 9 have a family member diagnosed with cancer; one in three women 10 and one in two men will be diagnosed with cancers in their 11 lifetimes; and 1.4 million people will be diagnosed with cancer 12 in the United States this year; and 13 WHEREAS, More than 559,000 Americans are expected to die from 14 cancer this year, and African-American men and women have the 15 highest mortality rates for all cancer sites combined; cancer is
1 the number one killer of those under 85 years of age; and 2 WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth have concern and 3 compassion for people affected by cancer; and 4 WHEREAS, By uniting people affected by cancer to raise 5 awareness through education, prevention, screening and early 6 detection efforts, we gain strength in the fight against cancer 7 in this Commonwealth; and 8 WHEREAS, The Lance Armstrong Foundation and many others 9 throughout this Commonwealth are committed to ensuring that all 10 cancer patients are treated with compassion and respect and are 11 provided with the tools and resources necessary to battle the 12 physical, emotional and practical challenges of a cancer 13 diagnosis; and 14 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is home to Abramson Cancer Center 15 of the University of Pennsylvania, Fox Chase Cancer Center, 16 Kimmel Cancer Center, The Wistar Institute and the University of 17 Pittsburgh Cancer Institute; and 18 WHEREAS, "LiveStrong Day" exemplifies the spirit of people 19 affected by cancer--survivors, caregivers, friends, family, 20 physicians, nurses, social workers and researchers--throughout 21 this Commonwealth; therefore be it 22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 16, 23 2007, as "LiveStrong Day" in Pennsylvania in support of cancer 24 awareness and commend the Lance Armstrong Foundation for its 25 continued commitment to this important cause.
