A RESOLUTION 1 Designating April 23, 2007, as "Cesar Chavez Day" in 2 Pennsylvania to honor his achievements in improving 3 farmworker health and safety. 4 WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was born in Arizona on March 31, 1927, 5 and died on April 23, 1993, only a few miles from his 6 birthplace; and 7 WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez lived most of his adult life in 8 California, a state that in many regards is dependent on its 9 farmworkers for providing for one of its largest economies; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez was a Mexican-American farmworker, labor 11 leader and civil rights activist who cofounded the National Farm 12 Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers; 13 and 14 WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez dedicated his life to improving the 15 health and safety aspects of farm work for its workers and is 16 considered to be a hero; and 17 WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez never feared reprisals or intimidation in
1 his efforts to improve the lot of the working poor; and 2 WHEREAS, A growing number of states with large agricultural 3 economies have established a "Cesar Chavez Day," and it is 4 fitting that Pennsylvania do so; therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April 6 23, 2007, as "Cesar Chavez Day" in Pennsylvania.
