INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 18, 2007
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the month of April 2007 as "National Minority Health 2 Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Minority populations face substantial cultural, 4 social and economic barriers to obtaining access to quality 5 health care; and 6 WHEREAS, "National Minority Health Month" has been observed 7 since April 2001 to eliminate health disparities and improve the 8 health status of minority populations; and 9 WHEREAS, "National Minority Health Month" is part of Healthy 10 People 2010, a national health promotion and disease prevention 11 initiative of the United States Department of Health and Human 12 Services and the United States Surgeon General; and 13 WHEREAS, Dr. Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute
1 began a national movement to eliminate the health disparities of 2 African Americans in 1914; and 3 WHEREAS, Affected populations now include African Americans, 4 Native Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Pacific Islanders, Alaskan 5 Natives and Native Hawaiians; and 6 WHEREAS, The Center for Minority Health of the University of 7 Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health focuses on these 8 health disparity priority areas: cancer, cardiovascular disease, 9 diabetes, HIV/AIDS, immunization, infant mortality and mental 10 health; and 11 WHEREAS, "Building Healthy Black Families -- Mind, Body and 12 Spirit" is the theme of the Center for Minority Health's special 13 events marking "National Minority Health Month" this year; 14 therefore be it 15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 16 month of April 2007 as "National Minority Health Month" in 17 Pennsylvania to address health disparities and promote sustained 18 improvements in the health status of all residents of this 19 Commonwealth.
