           APRIL 13, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of July 22 through 28, 2007, as "ADA Week"
     2     in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA),
     4  the world's first comprehensive civil rights law for persons
     5  with disabilities, was signed into law on July 26, 1990; and
     6     WHEREAS, Described as the Emancipation Proclamation for the
     7  disability community, the ADA prohibits discrimination on the
     8  basis of any disability; and
     9     WHEREAS, A disability can occur at birth or through accident,
    10  disease or aging; and
    11     WHEREAS, More than 50 million people in the United States,


     1  including more than 1.8 million people in this Commonwealth,
     2  have some level of disability; and
     3     WHEREAS, The ADA promotes accessibility, equality of
     4  opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic
     5  self-sufficiency; and
     6     WHEREAS, The ADA has opened public institutions; and
     7     WHEREAS, The ADA has expanded the benefits and privileges of
     8  education and employment; and
     9     WHEREAS, Compliance with the ADA's nondiscrimination
    10  principles and practices is improving the lives of individuals
    11  with disabilities and their families in this Commonwealth and
    12  beyond; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    14  week of July 22 through 28, 2007, as "ADA Week" in Pennsylvania.
