        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 13, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the life and achievements of actor Jack Palance, native
     2     of Lattimer, Luzerne County, and expressing condolences on
     3     his passing.

     4     WHEREAS, Jack Palance was born on February 18, 1919, in
     5  Lattimer, Luzerne County, to Ukrainian-born parents; and
     6     WHEREAS, As a youth, Mr. Palance worked in the Lattimer coal
     7  mines on the outskirts of Hazleton, following in the footsteps
     8  of his father; and
     9     WHEREAS, Mr. Palance's athletic build earned him a football
    10  scholarship to the University of North Carolina, but he cut
    11  short his college years to pursue a professional heavyweight
    12  boxing career; and
    13     WHEREAS, Mr. Palance won his first 15 fights; and

     1     WHEREAS, With the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Palance's
     2  boxing career ended and his military career began; and
     3     WHEREAS, Mr. Palance valiantly served his country in the
     4  United States Air Force as a bomber pilot until he was wounded
     5  in combat; and
     6     WHEREAS, Mr. Palance was honorably discharged from military
     7  service and promptly returned to Stanford University, studying
     8  journalism and then drama as his interest in acting gained
     9  momentum; and
    10     WHEREAS, Mr. Palance won his first movie role in "Panic in
    11  the Streets" in 1950, playing a fugitive carrying the bubonic
    12  plague; and
    13     WHEREAS, Mr. Palance garnered Academy Award nominations for
    14  his roles in "Sudden Fear" (1952) and Shane (1953); and
    15     WHEREAS, In 1957 Mr. Palance won the Emmy for Best Single
    16  Performance by an Actor for his work in "Requiem for a
    17  Heavyweight"; and
    18     WHEREAS, In the 1960s and 1970s Mr. Palance had roles in
    19  numerous westerns and war epics in Europe and played the villain
    20  in such movies as "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "Dracula"; and
    21     WHEREAS, In 1992 Mr. Palance won the Academy Award for Best
    22  Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his memorable
    23  portrayal of a seemingly villainous but loveable cowboy named
    24  Curly in "City Slickers"; and
    25     WHEREAS, Mr. Palance is survived by two of his three
    26  children, Holly and Brooke, and his wife, Elaine Rogers Palance;
    27  and
    28     WHEREAS, Mr. Palance always displayed pride in his
    29  Pennsylvania roots and returned to his farmhouse in Lattimer
    30  before his death; and

     1     WHEREAS, Mr. Palance's accomplishments will be remembered in
     2  this Commonwealth and around the world; therefore be it
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives note with deep
     4  sadness the passing of Jack Palance and extend heartfelt
     5  condolences to his family.
