INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 29, 2007
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of April 30 through May 5, 2007, as 2 "Perfusionist Appreciation Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Certified clinical perfusionists (CCPs) are trained 4 health professionals, having completed an accredited program and 5 having passed the national certification exam; and 6 WHEREAS, A CCP becomes the heart and lungs of a patient 7 undergoing surgery; and 8 WHEREAS, The primary role of CCPs during surgical procedures 9 is operating the heart-lung machine, monitoring oxygen status 10 and maintaining a patient's total blood flow; and 11 WHEREAS, CCPs may also be required to administer medication, 12 anesthetic agents and blood and blood products; and 13 WHEREAS, CCPs assemble, maintain and operate extracorporeal 14 circulation and bypass equipment, intra-aortic balloon pumps and
1 other heart assist devices to support or temporarily replace a 2 patient's cardiopulmonary functions during open-heart surgery; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, CCPs have been certified by the American Board of 5 Cardiovascular Perfusion and have proven, through education and 6 examination, their knowledge and clinical ability; and 7 WHEREAS, For more than 50 years, CCPs have provided life- 8 support services to patients while they are undergoing open- 9 heart and other complex surgery; and 10 WHEREAS, More than 250 CCPs ensure access to quality care for 11 residents of this Commonwealth; therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 13 week of April 30 through May 5, 2007, as "Perfusionist 14 Appreciation Week" in Pennsylvania.
