        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 19, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the week of March 18 through March 24, 2007, as
     2     "Agriculture Week" and March 21, 2007, as "Agriculture Day"
     3     in Pennsylvania.

     4     WHEREAS, Every citizen in this Commonwealth depends on our
     5  agriculture industry for an abundant, inexpensive, safe and
     6  nutritious food supply; and
     7     WHEREAS, Act 71 of 2001 provides for observance of
     8  "Pennsylvania Agriculture Day" and "Pennsylvania Agriculture
     9  Week"; and
    10     WHEREAS, Agriculture is Pennsylvania's number one industry;

     1  and
     2     WHEREAS, More than 8 million acres in this Commonwealth
     3  consist of field and pasture; and
     4     WHEREAS, More than half of all Pennsylvanians lived on farms
     5  during the pioneer era; and
     6     WHEREAS, Oliver Hudson Kelly founded the State Grange in
     7  1870; and
     8     WHEREAS, The State Grange was fundamental in educating
     9  farmers about new farming technology and techniques; and
    10     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has seen extraordinary changes in the
    11  size of farms and the utilization of technology; and
    12     WHEREAS, Farmland is a rapidly disappearing natural resource;
    13  and
    14     WHEREAS, According to the American Farmland Trust, the United
    15  States is losing two acres of farmland every minute to new
    16  development; and
    17     WHEREAS, Local farm businesses support farm and farm-related
    18  jobs; and
    19     WHEREAS, One job of every five jobs in Pennsylvania is
    20  agriculturally related; therefore be it
    21     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    22  week of March 18 through March 24, 2007, as "Agriculture Week"
    23  and March 21, 2007, as "Agriculture Day" in Pennsylvania and
    24  call upon the people of this Commonwealth to observe that day
    25  with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
