                                  A RESOLUTION

1 Designating March 24, 2007, as "Berean Institute Day" in
     2 Pennsylvania.

3 WHEREAS, Berean Institute, formerly known as the Berean
4 Manual Training and Industrial School, was founded in 1899 by
5 the Rev. Dr. Matthew Anderson, an African-American clergyman and
6 graduate of Princeton University and the Yale School of
7 Divinity, who believed that African Americans need more than the
8 "sermons on the Sabbath--they need help in the practical things
     9 of life"; and
10 WHEREAS, Berean Institute originally served as an engine of
11 social change by providing vocational education to African
12 Americans in the South so they could receive the job training
13 they needed to work in the North; and
14 WHEREAS, Today Berean Institute serves students throughout
15 the Delaware Valley as a two-year, not-for-profit institution of

     1 higher learning; and
2 WHEREAS, Berean Institute's motto is a "Place to Be Somebody,
3 Where You Learn to Earn"; and
4 WHEREAS, Berean Institute enables students to value the
5 dignity of work and become equipped to make a contribution to
6 the common good, to acquire competence in programs of study, to
     7  appreciate their own worth and to recognize the worth in others;
     8 and
9 WHEREAS, Berean Institute enables students to learn that the
10 joy of education lies in viewing it as a lifelong process, to
11 attain their fullest spiritual, intellectual and social
12 potential, to perceive their place in the culture which
13 distinguishes them and transmit it to future generations and to
14 understand the need for people to relate to and serve one
    15 another; therefore be it
16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March
17 24, 2007, as "Berean Institute Day" in Pennsylvania.
