        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 19, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of September 2007 as "Ovarian Cancer
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Every woman is at risk for ovarian cancer regardless
     4  of age, heritage or medical history; and
     5     WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, a woman's
     6  risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her lifetime
     7  is 1 in 67; and
     8     WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer


     1  death among women; and
     2     WHEREAS, Approximately two-thirds of women with ovarian
     3  cancer are 55 years of age or older; and
     4     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there
     5  were approximately 20,180 new cases of ovarian cancer in the
     6  United States in 2006 and that 15,310 women will die from
     7  ovarian cancer in 2007; and
     8     WHEREAS, About one-fifth of ovarian cancers are found at an
     9  early stage; and
    10     WHEREAS, Early detection improves the chances of survival;
    11  and
    12     WHEREAS, Nine out of ten women treated for early ovarian
    13  cancer will live longer than five years after the cancer is
    14  found; and
    15     WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer awareness and education is an
    16  important factor in diagnosis and treatment; therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    18  month of September 2007 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in
    19  Pennsylvania.
