           FABRIZIO, GALLOWAY, GEIST, GEORGE, GINGRICH, GOODMAN,
           GRUCELA, HESS, JAMES, MANDERINO, MANTZ, MILLARD, M. O'BRIEN,
           PARKER, PETRONE, PHILLIPS, RAMALEY, SCAVELLO, SONNEY, THOMAS,

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 13, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the achievements and contributions the Honorable
     2     Crystal Bird Fauset made during her lifetime to the General
     3     Assembly and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

     4     WHEREAS, The Honorable Crystal Bird Fauset, born on October
     5  15, 1894, was a graduate of Boston public schools and earned a
     6  bachelor's degree from Columbia University's Teachers College;
     7  and
     8     WHEREAS, Ms. Fauset was a social worker for the YWCA in New
     9  York and Philadelphia and was named Executive Secretary for the
    10  Institute for Race Relations at Swarthmore College in 1933; and
    11     WHEREAS, Ms. Fauset was elected to the Pennsylvania House of
    12  Representatives in 1938, thereby becoming the first African-
    13  American woman to be elected to a state legislature in the
    14  United States; and
    15     WHEREAS, Ms. Fauset later became Assistant Director for the
    16  Works Progress Administration in Pennsylvania and served as a

     1  race relations advisor to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and New
     2  York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia; and
     3     WHEREAS, Ms. Fauset was chairperson of the Philadelphia Negro
     4  Woman's Democratic League and a member of the board of trustees
     5  of Cheyney State Teachers College and the board of directors of
     6  the Small Business Opportunities Corporation of Philadelphia;
     7  and
     8     WHEREAS, Ms. Fauset died on March 27, 1965; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor and
    10  commemorate the lifetime of service and achievement of the
    11  Honorable Crystal Bird Fauset.
