        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 6, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Observing the month of March 2007 as "National Colorectal Cancer
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of
     4  cancer death among men and women in the United States; and
     5     WHEREAS, It is estimated that in 2006, physicians diagnosed
     6  more than 148,000 new cases of colorectal cancer in the United
     7  States; and
     8     WHEREAS, The disease is suspected to have killed more than
     9  55,000 individuals in the United States in 2006; and
    10     WHEREAS, If everyone 50 years of age or older would have
    11  regular colorectal cancer screening tests, more than 30,000

     1  lives could be saved a year because of early detection and
     2  treatment; and
     3     WHEREAS, Adopting a healthy diet at a young age can
     4  significantly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, March has been designated as "National Nutrition
     7  Awareness Month," and prevention of colorectal cancer is highly
     8  dependent on dietary factors; and
     9     WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer can almost always be cured if
    10  detected in its early stages; and
    11     WHEREAS, Regular screening tests detect colon polyps before
    12  they become cancerous, saving lives; and
    13     WHEREAS, Screening reduces mortality both by decreasing
    14  incidents and detecting a higher proportion of cancer at early,
    15  more treatable stages; and
    16     WHEREAS, Education can help inform the public of methods of
    17  prevention and symptoms of early detection; therefore be it
    18     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives observe the month
    19  of March 2007 as "National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month" in
    20  Pennsylvania.
